The importance of reading to and with our children cannot be over emphasized. As an aide, teacher and later administrator, I‘ve seen first hand how being read to and learning to read opens up new worlds of interests, imagination and insights.

What is fascination is the impact is not limited to language arts! Social studies, science, mathematics and other areas are dependent on the building blocks of reading.

At Williams School, we devote part of each school day to reading activities. As you can see from the pictures, we read books, make books and even write books. A special library time is set aside on Mondays when church member and volunteer, Monica Davis reads to each 3 and 4-year-old class.

Yes, we believe in reading; but, we want to do more. We want to offer more opportunities for our children to explore books by adding books to each classroom’s library. And we want other children beyond our Williams School family to have these opportunities as well.

That’s why I want to personally invite every church family to donate at least one new or gently used preschool and elementary age-appropriate book.

You may wish to give a book in honor of or in memory of a family member or friend.

Some of these books will stay in our classrooms and other will be shared with the Theron Jones Early Literacy Center as part of Williams’ volunteer mentoring program.

Our book drive will culminate with a school celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday the week of March 2nd.

Take a look at our “reading” pictures on this page and look for the book drop near the school office.

May your days be filled with good books!

Have you Noticed?

The Trustees are doing two large projects on Williams’ property. The first is the replacement of our metal roofs. The copper on the Sanctuary is being replaced along with the metal roofs on the Youth Center and Wesley Hall. Some time ago, during a major hail storm, the roofs of the entire church facility were damaged. Insurance has paid for the replacement and we are in the process of making those repairs.

By the time we are done Williams will have a new roof almost everywhere. While that is happening a few other modifications are being undertaken to take care of some long standing design issues with the roofs. This part of the project is planned to last for 120 days. During some of this time the driveway nearest the Sanctuary may be in use by the construction company. Please use the other driveway when this is happening.

The second project is the replacement of the asphalt in the back parking lot. We will be putting in a concrete parking lot in the high traffic and damaged areas of the parking lot just north of the educational wing of the church. This construction should last for four weeks. During this time, the front parking lot which faces Moores Lane will be our primary parking for all activities during the week.

On Sundays we will have alternate parking plans depending on the weather. Those details are being worked out and will be announced later.

These two projects are necessary improvements to our properties. Your patience and cooperation is very much needed during this time of renewal of our physical location. The most important part is the spiritual renewal God works in our hearts. Pray for your Williams family during this time of construction.

Soon many of our students will go on to explore the world of kindergarten. Graduation is always a happy yet sad time for our school staff. We’re so proud of our kids and confident of their abilities to face the challenges of kindergarten. We’re also a little sad to say goodbye to these children who are part of our family. Where has the time gone? Wasn’t it just yesterday that most of these kids were in the two-year-old classes, discovering simple science properties, the concept of numbers and the sounds of letters? Now they are grown up four and five-year-olds, reading sight words and books as well as using phonic skills to decode words, applying math concepts to solve problems, writing their names, addresses and phone numbers and becoming authors of small books.

Some of our graduates will be with us for the summer. Each week in the summer session we explore a different theme. Our kids will be excavating dinosaurs, celebrating our nation’s independence, exploring the treasures of the sea (and getting very wet on Sprinkler Day!), discovering our solar system, learning about farm animals, taking pretend vacations to distant lands and hosting a circus with the children performing all the circus stunts. We will also welcome visits from community helpers such as police officers, nurses, etc. It will be a very busy summer!

I continue to look forward to each day with our children as we explore, discover, and learn. What fun we have at Williams School!

Paula Hawkins
