Pakistan Flood Relief

Many of you know about the floods that have hit Pakistan in the past weeks. These floods have killed over 1400, and displaced thousands from their homes. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is coordinating with other relief agencies in the are to help those who are left without homes, crops, food, or a way to earn income.

According to the UMCOR Website At least 8 million Pakistanis are in dire need of emergency assistance—food, clean water, and shelter; more than 20 million have been affected. The United Nations says the disaster’s toll is comparable to the combined toll of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2004 Indonesia tsunami, and 2005 Kashmir earthquake.

Your help is urgently needed and you can do so in two ways. You may write a check and bring it to the church. Please make sure and put Pakistan Floods on the memo line of your check. Second you may donate directly by using the Disaster Response, International online donation form

Haiti: Our Youth Challenged and Respond

Our youths response to the earthquake in Haiti has been to challenge our congregation during the months of January, February, and March to raise enough money for 500 UMCOR health kits. As of February 11th, we have raised $1,956.10. At an approximate cost of $12 per health kit, we have so far raised enough money for 163 kits. We only have 337 kits or $4,043.90 to reach our goal.

As of February 9, 2010, over 100,000 health kits have been assembled at the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, La. This has been a wonderful response to the earthquake. Health kits provide the basic necessities for those who have been forced to leave their homes. They are such a blessing to those who have lost everything. “The UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, La., is the headquarters for UMCORs relief supply operations. Approximately $4 million in supplies are shipped each year from the Baldwin, La. campus. More than 2,000 volunteers that come through Sager Brown each year make these shipments happen.”

It is going to be many years before Haiti completely recovers from this disaster, and UMCOR has long range work plans in place that consist of 3 phases over the next 5 years. Our youth have plans as well. They are going to be volunteering this summer at the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, La. Thank you for supporting UMCOR. Thank you for supporting our youth group. Youth “Change Your World” focuses on Haiti Earthquake Relief

Williams Memorial Youth are responding to the earthquake in Haiti. This Sunday WM Youth asks that all monetary donations go directly to Haiti earthquake relief. For the months of January, February, and March WM Youth “Change The World” campaign will focus on UMCOR health kits. The youth are challenging the church to donate 500 health kits at an approximate cost of $12 per kit. However; this Sunday the youth asks that you please give directly to Haiti earthquake relief. More information about our health kit challenge will be coming out soon. The following information has already been sent out, but is important enough to mention once again.

Bishop Huie has asked all Methodist that we pray and give generously in response to the earthquake in Haiti. You may give directly by going to our website www.welcometowilliams.net click on “How You Can Help In Haiti” then click on “UMCOR Advance #418325.” Donations may also be made here at WMUMC by check to Williams Memorial UMC and writing Haiti relief in the memo. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has close ties with the Methodist Church in Haiti and is responding to the devastating earthquake with funding, material resources and prayers.”- from UMCOR Responds to Earthquake in Haiti

United Methodist Communications is working to provide timely and relevant information about how The United Methodist Church is responding to the tragic earthquake in Haiti and how United Methodists can support these efforts. United Methodists have had a long-standing relationship with Haiti through the Methodist Church of Haiti.

The United Methodist News Service posted an initial story soon following the tragedy and will have ongoing coverage about United Methodist mission teams that are in Haiti, response efforts by the United Methodist Committee on Relief, and what local churches are doing to provide aid.
